Looking for Christmas crafts with a snowman theme?
This cheery snowman makes a perfect Christmas ornament, gift, or Christmas tree decoration and is easy for kids to make. He's snowboarding on a colorful leaf!
(Suits age 7 and up)
To Make your Snowman Ornament, You'll Need:
A small dry pine cone which has opened out and has gaps in it (if it's closed, put it in a warm place for a week until it dries and opens).
Cotton wool
3 colorful fall leaves.
Silver and red glitter glue
Clear craft glue
Florist's wire
A soft feather
2 small twigs
Toothpick
Stapler
Scissors
Make the Snowman
Push small pieces of cotton wool into the spaces in the pinecone, using a toothpick (see photo above). Keep going until all the spaces in the pine cone are full and only the tips of the pinecone's spikes show between the cotton wool.
Twist a piece of florist's wire around the stem end of the pine cone and form it into two loops so that the pine cone leans against them and stands up.
Take a ball of cotton wool the right size for the head, and roll it in your hands to make it smooth. Glue it to the point of the pine cone.
Cut two twigs for arms. It's best if you can use twigs with a fork at one end. Find suitable places for them by pushing them into gaps in the pinecone, then pull them out and put glue on the ends. Push them back into place.
Make a hat for your Christmas snowman. Take two fall leaves and wrap them around to form a cone. Staple them together at the back. Trim off any stems that stick out.
Glue the hat onto the snowman's head.
Wrap the feather around the snowman's neck. Take it off and trim it to the right length, then glue it back into place.
Using glitter glue, give the snowman eyes, a nose and a wide smile.
Paint silver glitter glue onto the tips of the pine cone (between the cotton wool), and onto the snowman's hands. Paint silver snowflakes onto his hat with the glitter glue.
Stand your snowman on a colorful leaf, and stand the leaf on some cotton wool 'snow'.
If you want him to be a Christmas tree snowman, you could attach a loop of silver cord to the back of the pine cone (just below his hat), with florist's wire.
These little guys make wonderful snowman Christmas gifts. To personalise them, give your snowmen signs to hold. You can think of your own Christmas messages to write on them.
A group of these would look great sitting on your front doorstep on real snow - or make a row of them to brighten a windowsill. A cool snowman project for kids to make!
You could give him a gold bell on his hat and decorate him in green and gold. Try out your own color schemes and decoration ideas.
