Fishing Snowman Craft

winter snowman to make

Try this cute snowman craft. A snowman's fishing through a hole in the winter ice. Look! He's caught a fish!

This simple snowman craft makes clever use of an old CD. It's sure to cause a few chuckles and makes a wonderful snowman gift or winter decoration. Kids will love making it, but it's a bit fiddly so they'll need you to help.

(Suits kids age 7 and up)

For this Fishing Snowman Craft, You'll Need:

  • An old CD you don't want to use any more
  • Clear craft glue
  • Small pieces of green and black felt
  • Cotton wool
  • Scrap of red paper
  • 3 dark colored seed beads
  • 3 small twigs
  • Black thread
  • Toothpick
  • A small colored feather
  • Scrap of tinfoil
  • Clothes peg
  • Make Your Fishing Snowman Ornament

    1. Make 3 balls of cotton wool in different sizes, and glue them together with the smallest on top to make the cotton wool snowman. Glue a toothpick along the snowman's back to keep him upright.
    2. To make the snowman's hat, cut a rectangle of black felt, wrap it around the tip of your finger, overlap the ends and glue them together to form a tube. Stuff the tube with cotton wool. Glue a small black felt circle to cover the top of the tube and trim to fit. Glue a large circle of black felt to the open side of the tube to form the brim of the hat. Now you have a homemade snowman hat!
    3. Glue the snowman's hat to the top of his head. Trim the feather to fit, and glue it to the snowman's hat.
    4. Cut a long strip of green felt for the snowman's scarf. Decorate the scarf by snipping the ends to make a fringe. Wrap it around his neck and glue it in place.
    5. Next glue on seed beads for the eyes and nose. This is a bit fiddly. The best way to do it is to pick up a seed bead on the end of a toothpick, roll it in glue, press it onto the snowman's face, then slide the bead off the toothpick with your fingernail.
    6. Once you've beaded your snowman's face, cut a smiling mouth from the red paper and glue it in place. Glue one or more tiny circles of felt on for buttons.
    7. Glue on two twigs for arms. Once the glue has dried, pull the arms together and glue a straight twig between them to be the fishing rod. Clamp the arms together with a clothes peg until the glue has dried.
    8. Tie a pice of black thread to the end of the fishing rod and feed it through the hole in the CD.
    9. Take a scrap of tinfoil and draw a fish on it using a toothpick. Cut it out and glue it onto the end of the fishing line.

To display your homemade snowman craft, place the CD so that it sticks out over the edge of a table or shelf, and stick it down with adhesive putty.

This makes a great snowman gift for a Dad who loves fishing. You could add a baby snowman or some snowman kids to sit and fish next to their Dad!

Think of other ways of decorating the snowman. You could make a pompom snowman and decorate him with cloves for eyes and cinnamon sticks for arms. Whole star anise might make a hat. Or paint your snowman with glitter glue.

How about making a mobile out of this snowman project? Attach threads to the edges of the CD and adjust them so that the CD hangs flat.

Have fun dreaming up your own snowman patterns and ideas!
