Sock Snowman Craft

Sock craft ideas and sock craft projects - snowman.

Make an Adorable Sock Snowman - or snow-woman like the one in the photo!

Sock crafts are fun and easy. Nothing's wasted with this project - make the snowman ornament and later you can wear the socks.

Depending on the socks' sizes, you could make a baby snowman , snowman kids, or a whole family of crazy sock snowmen and snow-women!
(Suits kids age 8 and up.)

To Make a Snowman from Socks, You'll Need:

  • 2 pairs of socks, one pair white and the other with colored stripes (tube socks are best, but the ones with heels work too).
  • A piece of colored ribbon that matches the stripy socks
  • Two shiny glass or plastic beads for eyes, and about 20 seed beads for the nose and mouth, in a color matching the stripy socks.
  • Three heart shaped beads for buttons, again in a matching color.
  • Needle and white thread
  • Scissors
  • How to Make Your Sock Snowman:

Making the snowman takes about 15 minutes.
    1. Roll one white sock up to make a sock ball. Stuff it into the toe of the other white sock.
    2. Now make a sock ball from one of the stripy socks. Stuff it into the white sock too, above the first sock ball.
    3. Roll the top of the second stripy sock over and over until it looks like a little knitted hat. Roll up the top of the white sock and pull the hat on over it.
    4. Tie the ribbon around the white sock to form the snowman's neck. Use a double knot. The snowman's head should be about one third the size of his body.
    5. Sew the two shiny beads to the sock snowman's face for eyes. Between beads, just run the thread under the surface of the sock. There's no need to finish off each time. Don't sew too securely if you want to take the beads off later so that you can wear the socks!
    6. Sew on a single seed bead for the nose.
    7. Start with the thread coming out of the sock where one corner of the mouth should be. Thread all the seed beads onto the thread in a row, and then stitch the other corner of the mouth down. The row of beads will hang in a smile.
    8. Now stitch on a row of heart shaped beads for buttons and secure the thread.
    9. Arrange your tube sock snowman's hat and scarf so that he looks life-like, by pulling the hat down at the back of his head, and placing the knot of the scarf to one side.

Place your sock snowman ornament where he'll be seen and enjoy the compliments.

But be warned - when we made one, my daughter loved it so much she never wants to take it apart to wear the socks!

Sock gifts are a great idea. Buy 2 pairs of socks the right size for someone and make this snowman. Give it as a gift. Once the snowman's been enjoyed, he becomes 2 useful pairs of socks.

You could try making different kinds of sock decorations. How about a sock reindeer, a sock santa, or even sock people for a nativity scene?

Try putting a paper sachet of powdered cinnamon and cloves into your sock snowman to give him a lovely spicy smell.

What else could you make out of socks? Perhaps sew lots of fluffy socks end-to-end to make a sock scarf!

Think of more snowman crafts to make with your kids.
